FEADSHIP: First look at Project 823

The 67.40-meter Project 823 has finally been revealed to the public eye. In preparation for her sea trials later this year, the impressive new Feadship has been relocated outside the construction hall at the Kaag yard.

Feadship has developed all aspects of Project 823 in-house. Azure Naval Architects did the hull engineering, and Studio De Voogt did the exterior and interior architecture.

The exterior is imposing, with a powerful sheer line running from the stern to the bow. The yacht exudes sophistication thanks to its chiselled outlines and dark horizontal strip windows.

"The main theme of the yacht is strength," says Jan Schaffers, senior designer at Studio De Voogt. "The radii throughout are larger than usual to emphasise this. At the same time we aimed to focus on the length of the yacht by creating uninterrupted lines, for instance in the widebody windows and the superstructure. Together this creates a very unique character."

The yacht's interior was designed and built around the needs of the yacht's experienced owner and his family. The yacht's three lower-deck cabins, one VIP suite on the bridge deck, and one master stateroom on the main deck forward can all comfortably fit ten guests.

Studio De Voogt's minimalist but elegant interior design is based on earthy tones, bright wood veneers, and organic shapes to create a formal but friendly atmosphere.

The large sundeck is a standout part of the ship's design and a place where passengers of all ages can meet up. Wide side windows and nine skylights in the roof guarantee uninterrupted views and en plein air appeal, while the centre lounging/conversation zone is shielded from the wind and the sun by the hardtop. The ventilation frames, which can be thought of as sturdy legs, are covered in grilles that echo the horizontal lines to create a sleeker volume without sacrificing any of the structure's heft.

So that it could cover these glass roofs, flat-panel satellite equipment for high-speed internet was built into the radar mast.

The tenders are hidden away on the foredeck, behind the tall bulwarks, so that the ship's lower deck can be dedicated to a spa and fitness centre.

The crew's quarters and service areas have also been upgraded, with new refrigerators and freezers, a larger laundry room, and more dry storage space on the tank level.
