Zambian Emeralds in Flower-inspired Oriental Elegance.
The MidnightOperaHouse x Gemfields "Floral Seasonscape" Collection is the result of a collaboration between Gemfields and the Chinese jewellery company MidnightOperaHouse. Gemfields has never collaborated with a Chinese designer brand until their partnership with MidnightOperaHouse. Three exquisite pieces have been painstakingly made, and they all showcase Gemfields Zambian emeralds in an Art Deco design that is very Eastern.
It was in Beijing that designer Johnny Gengyi Yu established MidnightOperaHouse. In an effort to spark a fascinating conversation between exotic delicacy and Oriental grace, the jewellery design combines classical components with trendy style. As a designer, Johnny Gengyi Yu has a lifelong soft spot for florals.
Gemfields Zambian emeralds, with their deep green sparkle, shimmer among the peaceful natural black agate in this "Floral Seasonscape" set, which exudes stunning beauty and a soothing Oriental elegance. These pieces beautifully capture the beauty of flowers throughout the year, whether they're blossoming in the autumn, swaying in the wind, or sitting in a vase. They skillfully incorporate cultural elements of floral beauty into fine jewellery, capturing a timeless and romantic sentiment of elegance and refinement.
When asked about the experience of designing, Johnny Gengyi Yu replied, “This set of works is an attempt to blend oriental aesthetics, classical Baroque art influences, and modern Art Deco style. The highlights of this creation are Gemfields' Zambian emeralds, which inject a touch of vitality into the elegant Oriental charm. They not only perfectly illuminate the classical and elegant colours, but also emanate a delicate and artistic flair.”
Three items of jewellery are part of the "Floral Seasonscape" Collection. Inspired by Eastern bonsai art, this necklace has black agate inlaid with gemfields including emeralds, mother-of-pearl, diamonds, and a detachable pearl necklace. Exuding an Eastern appeal, it is beautifully created with diamonds and mother-of-pearl on an 18k white gold base and features a bouquet of narcissus in its core.
This narcissus is housed in a vase that is reminiscent of the classical Baroque period. Carved into petal patterns from black natural agate, the vase's main body showcases five round-cut Gemfields Zambian emeralds, a brilliant shade of green, encircled by diamonds that outline geometric lines in an artistic way. A trio of pear-shaped Gemfields Zambian emeralds are set in an enthralling sequence at the base of the necklace, which is embellished with three strands of saltwater pearls. Their emerald green brilliance contrasts with the white pearls and sparkling Gemfields Zambian emeralds on the vase, creating a timeless opulence that complements the exquisite Oriental design.
To complement the primary necklace, the designer has also made a pair of earrings. "The Window Harbours Autumn Blooms" depicts a window scene with Mother-of-Pearl, gold sand, and agate inlaid with gemfields of Zambian emeralds. Earrings with a base of natural black agate and a contemporary elliptical shape. The exquisite flower patterns depicted with gold sand and hand-carved mother-of-pearl, adorned with sixteen round-cut Gemfields Zambian emeralds in vibrant green, evoke the feeling of peering through a window at a symphony of fall blossoms on a moonless night.
The artwork exudes an air of serene and breathtaking beauty. "Luxuriant Golden Orchids," Set in a Gemfield of Zambian Emeralds on Black Agate The 'Double Hook Orchid' by Ming Dynasty painter Qiu Ying is the inspiration for the Teardrop-shaped Floral Cluster Earrings. These long, teardrop earrings are the epitome of style. Gemfields Zambian emeralds, which are pear-shaped, are the focus point at the connecting point. Glistening round-cut Gemfields Zambian emeralds cover the lower half of the earrings, which are exquisitely wrapped in golden threads and portray beautiful, verdant flora and plants in an Oriental freehand manner. The design is excellent and has smooth lines.
“We hope that the pieces in this collaboration with Gemfields Zambian emeralds will not only be treasured as collector's items, but that they will also bring inspiration to people's daily outfits. The back of the vase in our main necklace incorporates a delicate mechanism, allowing it to be detached and worn separately as a brooch for a richer and more versatile use, giving rise to the name '玲珑' ('Linglong,' meaning exquisite),” said designer Johnny Gengyi Yu.
