Zenith's DEFY Extreme E edition is the lightest version of their breakthrough 1/100th of a second chronograph to date, and it was designed just for Season 3 of Extreme E. The DEFY Extreme E edition combines the values of sustainability shared by Extreme E and ZENITH's HORIZ-ON initiative of CSR objectives and commitments with performance-centric materials and a high-frequency chronograph movement capable of accurately measuring elapsed time to an astounding level of precision. It incorporates recycled and repurposed components from the actual races into the strap and packaging, as well as vividly coloured accents in Extreme E's characteristic "Vital Green" tone to promote awareness and action on climate change.

On this latest ZENITH special edition created for Extreme E, CEO Julien Tornare shared: “This is the third year that Extreme E has been championing the causes of sustainability and climate change awareness, which are central to ZENITH’s HORIZ-ON CSR initiative. ZENITH's DEFY Extreme E version is a lightweight take on their most durable 1/100th of a second chronograph. The DEFY Extreme E edition is the first model in the series to be built fully in lightweight yet durable carbon fibre, including the pushers and their protective features, and has been tested in some of the most harsh situations and settings that Extreme E has delivered. With the band and triple-folding clasp, also made of carbon fibre, the entire watch weighs only 96 grammes.

This tough chronograph has an open multi-layered dial made of tinted sapphire crystal parts and decorated with Extreme E's official "Vital Green" colour accents. This is a nod to the championship's emphasis on environmental responsibility. The open dial and sapphire case back reveal the world's fastest automated high-frequency chronograph calibre, which measures time to the nearest 1/100th of a second using two escapements that tick at 5Hz (36'000 VpH) for the timekeeping portion and 50Hz (360'000 VpH) for the chronograph.

The DEFY Extreme E version comes with a rubber strap made from repurposed Continental CrossContact tyres from the inaugural season of racing, showcasing the themes of sustainability and environmental consciousness. The black rubber core of the Velcro strap is encircled by green cordura-effect rubber, just like the Extreme E Vital Green details on the dial. The case back of the DEFY Extreme E version features a rapid strap-change mechanism that makes switching out the straps a breeze and requires no equipment. The extra straps included with this edition are made of black rubber and black Velcro.

Inspired by the harsh circumstances of the rally and using numerous recycled components from the sidelines of the inaugural Season's races, the DEFY Extreme E edition comes in a waterproof and crushproof watch casing. The plate covering is constructed from remnants of an Extreme E racing tarpaulin, and the lid coating is manufactured from recycled E-grip tyres.
