SOLD: The Most Expensive Estate in Connecticut History for $138.8 Million.

A sprawling 50+ acre waterfront estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, known as Copper Beech Farm, has been sold for $138,830,000 by Sotheby's International Realty's Greenwich Brokerage's Leslie McElwreath and Joseph Barbieri and Sotheby's International Realty's East Side Manhattan Brokerage's Nikki Field. The transaction is the most expensive residential real estate transaction in Connecticut history and one of the most costly transactions nationwide.

It is the largest waterfront tract in Greenwich and is located on a private peninsula that spans over 50 acres with over a mile of frontage. The property originally held the distinction of being the most expensive house in the nation. This home offers breathtaking views of Long Island Sound from its vantage point 40 feet above mean high water. Two private beaches, an apple orchard, a swimming pool, a grass tennis court, and a grand main house are all included in the property. There are also stunning walled gardens throughout. A carriage house, gatehouse, pool house, and two greenhouses are among the ancillary structures that are surrounded by acres of undulating turf.

“Copper Beech Farm is the crown jewel of the Greenwich coastline,” said McElwreath. “It’s an awe-inspiring compound complete with every conceivable luxury for a sophisticated live, work, and play retreat.”

The 13,519 square foot, 8-bedroom, 8-bathroom main mansion, which was originally constructed in 1898 and painstakingly rebuilt, echoes the grandeur of New England's most illustrious coastal estates, intended for splendid summering by the water. Two French Renaissance-style stone towers define the house, which is approached by a meandering 1,800-foot road surrounded by an allée of trees and cobblestone gutters and adds aristocratic elegance to the Victorian-influenced home. Original museum-quality features like oak paneling, plaster friezes, magnificent fireplaces, and 12-foot ceilings in the principal rooms emphasize the interiors. Nearly every room in the home has a view of the sea, maximizing the beauty of its breathtaking location.

“The opportunity to purchase a residence of this high calibre is a true rarity," said Barbieri. “It was our honour to be charged with representing such an unparalleled, historic estate in one of the most coveted markets.”

“This remarkable sale resoundingly proclaims the unassailable verity that Greenwich reigns supreme. Purchasers recognize the charm of the town, with its close proximity to Manhattan, its amenities, schools, and shopping and dining experiences are unparalleled amidst the coveted tapestry of residential havens.” -Pam Pagnani, senior vice president and brokerage manager of Sotheby’s International Realty – Greenwich Brokerage.
