Shruti Sushma x Gemfields: Emerald Jewellery Collection.
Gemfields and exquisite jeweller Shruti Sushma have formed a new brand partnership. Using exquisite patterns that evoke the glitz of yesteryear and draw inspiration from India's celebrated tradition of excellent craftsmanship, the mother-daughter company from India is recognised for its use of high-quality jewels. Affluent customers from all around the world visit Shruti Sushma's stores in Ahmedabad and Bangalore.
The Kagem emerald mine in Zambia is home to some of the most remarkable emeralds in the world, and Gemfields, a global leader in the ethical mining and marketing of coloured gemstones, has the majority stake in the mine. The purity, size, and deep green colour of Zambian emeralds make them highly desirable. Mining operations at Kagem are known for their honesty, legality, and integrity, and the firm is serious about protecting the environment and giving back to the people in Africa where its operations are located.
“I believe that responsible mining of emeralds transcends mere extraction; it embodies a dedication to safeguarding ecosystems, honouring communities, and securing a sustainable legacy for both nature and future generations,” says Shruti Sushma’s founder, Sushma Chhajer.
“Gemfields has been a pioneer in championing these principles, leading the way in responsible practices in the industry. Zambian emeralds from Gemfields boast a remarkable hardness, making them particularly well-suited for daily use, ensuring enduring beauty that withstands the rigours of everyday life.”
Sushma’s daughter and business partner, Shruti Chhajer, adds: “The exceptional colour and clarity of Gemfields emeralds provides the perfect canvas to craft captivating and distinctive designs that resonate with our clients, who appreciate both aesthetic beauty and ethical considerations in their jewellery choices.”
Various designs incorporating Kagem's emeralds—often set with diamonds or tanzanites—are showcased in the partnership. Necklaces and earrings in the collection feature delicate floral motifs. For example, the Sugarloaf Long Emerald Chain necklace has sugarloaf-cut emeralds and diamonds that form a delicate floral tapestry, while the Waterlily Emerald and Diamond Earrings painstakingly depict small waterlily flowers. The Mughal period in India is the inspiration for the Cabochon Emerald Earrings, while jewels are used to symbolise love in the Amore Emerald and Tanzanite necklaces. They are all made of 18-karat gold.
Having grown up in India in a family of textile merchants, Shruti Sushma began her career in jewellery creation 25 years ago with a passion for gemstones and an absence of formal education. Her inquisitive daughter Shruti soon followed suit, and the two soon found themselves jet-setting throughout the country to meet with customers and participate in trade events. The year 2008 saw the launch of their first showroom. With their delicate, wearable approach that is lighter on metal than traditional Indian style, their creations have reimagined Indian fashion.
Emeralds, with their serene and revitalising energy, are particularly appealing to Sushma, a practitioner of chakra healing. This collaboration with Gemfields brings together exquisite Indian craftsmanship and breathtaking coloured gemstones: a soul-calming experience.
