A Conversation with William Taborn: Leadership, Resilience, and Vision
For William Taborn, CEO of Mitre Law, leadership is more than a title—it’s a responsibility deeply rooted in values, resilience, and adaptability. In this candid interview, Taborn shares his journey, inspirations, and insights into navigating the legal industry while staying true to his ethos.
William Taborn’s story begins in a loving and supportive family. “I was lucky enough to grow up in an environment where thinking about others was instilled in me from an early age,” he reflects. This ethos shaped his approach to relationships and leadership.
As a student, Taborn describes himself as “slightly above average” with plenty of friends and a passion for sports. “I flew under the radar,” he laughs, underscoring his unassuming nature during his formative years.
Taborn’s entry into the legal industry was anything but conventional. “My father heard about a job in a barristers’ chambers through a friend in the pub,” he recalls. “I went for an interview, spent 45 minutes discussing rugby with the Senior Clerk, and got the job.” This serendipitous start led him to discover a passion for the legal field, ultimately setting him on the path to where he is today.
When it comes to inspiration, Taborn doesn’t look far. “My dad taught me the value of hard work, running one of the oldest family businesses in London, and my mom was a force of nature. Her achievements, despite immense challenges, were incredible.” These role models instilled in him the importance of perseverance and integrity—values that have become the cornerstones of his leadership philosophy.
“Never ask someone to do something you wouldn’t do yourself,” Taborn advises. “And always deliver on your promises.” These principles are evident in his career milestones, from serving as Clerk to the Attorney General to co-owning a law firm. “Starting my own business was a defining moment,” he says. “It felt like coming full circle, having grown up in a family-business environment.”
For Taborn, talent development begins with aligning values during recruitment. “It’s about finding a fit between the individual and the company,” he explains. He champions a culture of open dialogue and fresh perspectives to nurture and retain talent.
The legal industry, however, presents its own set of challenges. “The biggest hurdle is recognizing that legal advice is a service like any other. It’s about listening to clients and delivering what they need, whether that’s expertise, value, or simply a trusted ear.”
Outside the office, Taborn prioritizes health and family. “I stay active with gym workouts, rugby, and motorbikes,” he shares. “Spending time with my wife, our two miniature dachshunds, and friends is my way of unwinding.”
When asked about the best advice he’s received, Taborn doesn’t hesitate. “Always think of the other person,” he says. “It’s something I’ve carried with me throughout my life.”
For those looking to disrupt their industries, Taborn emphasizes the importance of preparation and adaptability. “Research thoroughly and ask yourself if it’s truly needed. Be flexible and ready to change direction. And prepare as though success is already a given—it helps you cope when challenges arise.”
William Taborn’s journey is one of perseverance, values, and visionary leadership. His family, friends, and colleagues have witnessed the ups and downs of his career, and their pride in his achievements is evident. “They’ve seen the tenacity I’ve shown while staying true to my values,” he shares.
As he continues to lead Mitre Law, Taborn remains a beacon of resilience and integrity in an ever-changing industry. His story serves as an inspiration to leaders and aspiring professionals alike—a testament to the power of staying grounded while reaching for the stars.
