Feadship: Project 1011 Prepares for Sea Trials.

The Feadship Facility in Makkum has released Project 1011. She is still being fitted out before her North Sea sea trials and eventual delivery.

With her sharp outer lines and vertical bow, Project 1011 stands out from the crowd. Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design created her from the inside out, and Azure Yacht Design developed her naval architecture. Twenty outside sliding doors and twelve glass windbreaks add up to the yacht's total exterior glass area of 1,100 square metres. With eight hull doors (including the biggest tender garage door ever fitted on a Feadship), a helicopter hangar under the front helipad, and four outside hot tubs, this yacht has everything a discerning charter guest could want.

The 103-metre Project 1011 was constructed for a seasoned client who oversaw its development from the very beginning.

“As a repeat client and Feadship fan who has built his own yachts in the past, the client had a very clear idea of what we are capable of and pushed the boundaries in terms of design and engineering,” says Feadship Director / CEO, Henk de Vries. “He wanted to be part of the team, which ordinarily is something we try to avoid, but he was fully prepared to collaborate, and our working relationship ended up being both friendly and fun!”

A difficult directive was given at the start of Project 1011. For better access to anchorages and harbours, the owner requested that the boat's volume be reduced by half while maintaining the same amenities and living space as his previous 6,000-GT vessel. The end product is a lesson in spatial planning and rule discovery.

Although a two-level engine room is the norm for yachts of this size, the designers of Project 1011 opted for a single-level layout so that more of the yacht's interior could be used for entertaining. Project 1011 was instrumental in spreading this concept, and now a similar project is being built in Makkum.

All facets of the construction were fraught with engineering and technological difficulties. The main deck guest apartments have windows of six metres in width, while the tender garage shell door is 15 metres in length, making it the longest ever constructed by Feadship. The main atrium makes great use of glass, including tall glass stairwells and a lift, as well as completely retractable glass doors and a futuristic bridge designed by Kongsberg.
